The brief

The Battle Abbey: 1066 Conquest & Consequences project seeks to progress Battle Abbey into an all year round visitor attraction through the successful delivery of a comprehensive new visitor experience primarily focused on the Gatehouse coupled with addressing historic fabric conservation issues on the Gatehouse and wider site.

The Works that the Supplier is to provide can be summarised in a number of distinct elements: 1.

Repair and conservation works to Battle Abbey Gatehouse and to ruins within the wider Battle Abbey site - lime mortar based conservation is required to ensure wall tops and surfaces continue to shed water and prevent the wall core from becoming voided.

The work entails removal of invasive vegetation, repointing, rebedding, rebuilding, grouting, flaunching, occasional stone indents and replacements, together with a degree of pinning and stitching; 2.

Provision of safe visitor access to the Gatehouse roof via two existing spiral staircases – one of which requires substantial repair and conservation to make it suitable for public use; 3.

Provision of a new viewing platform on the central Gatehouse roof including protective barriers around the Gatehouse crenellations; 4.

Adaption of the existing Courthouse [adjacent to the Gatehouse] first floor conference room to accommodate a new office facility and separate private meeting room space; 5.

Refurbishment of the existing staff unisex toilet facilities; Suppliers wishing to participate should express interest and complete that Pre Qualification Questionnaire by 18th August 2015
