Land Use Change Statistics 2017/18

Land Use Change Statistics (LUCS) are a rich source of information which shows how land use has changed in England.

The information includes the nature of the changes, the areas of land affected and the locations of the changes.

The LUCS series is a National Statistic for which there is an expectation among users that publication will continue each year.

Statistics are published annually with accompanying open-source tables.

MHCLG regularly receives queries from the public, academics, media, lobby groups and industry experts and parliamentary questions on the topic covered by the National Statistic.

The data was initially procured from Ordnance Survey from 1989-2011.

In 2013-14 a contract for a new series of the data (not comparable with the 1989-2011 set) was subjected to an open tender process.

The contract was won by Ordnance Survey and these arrangements expired on 3 September 2018.

MHCLG is proposing to award a new contract to Ordnance Survey to provide an additional year's worth of land use change statistics data, for 2017-18.

Longer term, MHCLG will consult more broadly with users on future data requirements and provision - prior to launching a new, competitive tender exercise.
