The Council wishes to invite tenders for the supply of works in respect of works to form new gatehouse approach, alterations to existing castle, creation of new pedestrian access, construction of new entrance pavilion and multi-functional events facility and landscaping and external lighting works at Newark Castle.
The aims of this contract are: • The Gatehouse shall become more accessible through reinserted floors, roof, and roof top viewing decking. • The new entrance pavilion shall create an accessible visitor reception / access control point.
This shall include an accessible platform lift to the first-floor level of the Gatehouse and North West Tower. • There will be ground floor alterations, to provide inclusive level access from the Entrance Pavilion to the North West Tower. • A new boundary entrance gate and Gatehouse approach to be erected to provide access through to the Gatehouse from Beast Market Hill • A multi-functional building is to be constructed beneath the gatehouse stairs to enable educational and engagement activities. • At first floor level the floor of the North West Tower is to be reinstated to its original medieval level with a connecting walkway to the roof of the Entrance pavilion. • Mechanical and electrical services shall be comprehensively installed across the site to enhance interpretation and visitor experience.
A new control point shall be developed within the multi-function building. • Step free access shall be improved through an external path which joins up to the top of the multifunction building and the gatehouse entrance. • Landscaping works including planting around site, terraced garden, development of Watergate gardens. • External lighting will highlight key architectural features, improve existing lighting, and enhance footpath and wayfinding lighting.
