The brief

The University of Plymouth is part of a consortium lead by Plymouth City Council, including Plymouth Marine Laboratory, the University of Exeter and the Marine and Coastguard Agency, working collaboratively on the project: Maritime Regulatory Innovation Framework (MRIF) - Developing regulatory frameworks to support maritime innovation.

The aim of the consortium is to propose a regulatory framework which addresses the industry's needs to drive R&D in a safe, timely and cost-effective manner.

The consortium are investigating the challenges surrounding Maritime Regulation and the adoption of new technologies.

The existing regulatory regime can limit the R&D and testing opportunities because the evidence base required for certification can often only be created through operation of vessels, yet the certification is a prerequisite to such operations.
