The brief

With the introduction of the Care Act 2014, Local Authorities must have care and support systems to intervene early to support individuals, help people retain or regain skills or confidence, and prevents need or delay of deterioration wherever possible.

Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council is seeking to commission an organisation to work alongside its internal Occupational Therapy Service and Social Work Teams to re-assess all people who currently receive multi handed care calls.

Currently Sandwell has 465 multi handed care packages that are to be reviewed to assess the suitability to reduce carer handling with the implementation of equipment and or assistive technology.

We acknowledge that this may not be appropriate for all cases and will be based on individual needs.

The work will comprise of full assessments or re-assessments of Service Users needs which will include direct contact with the Service Users, working in their homes.

Where changes are made to the care provided, a review will also be included.

The Provider will be required to work with other professionals and care providers to guide and demonstrate to staff, and informal carers, use of any reduced carer handling approaches, equipment, technology, and techniques.

The Provider would be required to report back to the Council any required changes to the package of care so these actions can be implemented in a timely and effective manner.

The Provider will be required to use the assessment documentation provided by the Council.
