Cavern Sonar Scanning
The Oil and Pipelines Agency (OPA) currently run two separate underground storage depots located within Cheshire.
Plumley PSD consists of 35 underground storage caverns each averaging 90 000 (square metres) in size located around 250m below ground level in the salt strata.
Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) site consists of two larger caverns (approx.
500 000 (square metres total volume) situated 1km from the main site.
It was decided that the storage capacity was no longer required and therefore a number of caverns have contained hydrocarbons since mothballing.
