The brief

At the BFI, we have significant work to do to decarbonise both our estate and operations which will result in a more financially and environmentally sustainable organisation.

For purposes of clarity, this tender solely focuses on the BFI's internal facing work and operations as an organisation.

The BFI has already commissioned a costed and time lined Heat Decarbonisation Plan for our estate, which highlights key priority areas and sets out how, with significant cost investment, we could reach net zero by 2037 in scope 1 and 2.

In addition to the Heat Decarbonisation Plan, the BFI has an established Estates Strategy Sustainability Framework published by Change Building which is used to set out principles that are applied to all projects related to our estate.

We expect the successful bidder to utilise both the Heat Decarbonisation Plan and the Estates Strategy Sustainability Framework to develop a robust measure of residual scope 1 and 2 emissions as well as scope 3.

The detail provided below is not an exhaustive list of our carbon sources, but rather indicative and we welcome other suggestions from bidders about considerations we should take into account as part of our Routemap to Net Zero.

The Routemap should take into account reporting regulations, and we would expect further guidance on any additional notable mandates or targeted dates for Non-Departmental Public Bodies to achieve for both compliance and best practice.

The aim for the BFI is to understand both the detail and the breadth of our carbon emissions, particularly scope 3 but to also set a target date for operational Net Zero.
