The brief

Ofcom has a requirement for the continuation of the Technology Tracker, an annual survey of the UK population that measures access and usage habits relating to a wide range of devices and communications services.

The survey includes a number of high-level measures (such as internet access at home), as well as questions relating to specific devices and/or services used online (e.g. voice notes) and offline (e.g. digital radio).

As an official statistic and one of Ofcom's longest-running tracker surveys (first commissioned in 2002), the Technology Tracker is a robust source of information that helps us understand the landscape in which we operate as the regulator for communications in the UK.

Data from the Technology Tracker is widely used, underpinning many of our internal projects as well as informing the work of numerous external organisations.

The primary objectives of the Technology Tracker are: To measure access to and usage of domestic tech devices and communications services among a representative sample of the UK population (aged 16+) To provide analysis by total population as well as by demographic, sub-groups and other cohorts of particular interest To track and compare core data points over time, as well as to capture emerging trends To provide a robust, reliable and representative data set that is suitable for publication and for use by a range of internal and external stakeholders.
