This new Prehabilitation pilot clinical service aims to optimise patients prior to elective cancer major surgery.
The service comprises supervised exercise, dietetic optimisation and psychological support.
In order to deliver a "dose" of intervention, patient groups with a 6 week period in the existing patient pathway have been chosen.
These groups are the patients preparing for surgery to the oesophagus, stomach, bladder, rectum, liver (secondary cancers) and gynaecological organs.
Patients may participate in the service either during or after chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
The objective of the service is to successfully deliver 1 hour supervised exercise sessions, using a mix of aerobic and resistance exercises, three times a week for 6 weeks.
It is anticipated that based on clinical need there may be some flexibility in the time available for each individual patient.
Providers should be able to provide services at one or more of the following localities; Market Harborough, Melton Mowbray Hinckley.
Providers must have: - experience of supervising exercise for people with chronic disease, including a history of stable cardio-vascular disease, diabetes, lung disease, musculoskeletal conditions, obesity. - ability to provide sessions x2 per week; be able to provide 6 week duration programme; Capacity to deliver both aerobic and strength training. - have Level 3 qualified exercise instructors; Patients and Project team to have access to Level 4 Cancer Rehab qualified instructors to provide support and reviews as necessary.
