Background Information for the proposed Work Order The site is the A194(M) southbound carriageway between the A1(M)/A194(M) Jc 65 Birtley, and the A194(M)/A184T Whitemare Pool roundabout.
The existing pavement surfacing consists of a mixture of a Thin Surface Course System (TSCS) between 7-10 years old, and an aged Hot Rolled Asphalt (HRA).
The A194(M) mainline dual carriageway motorway is reaching the end of its serviceable life.

Defects such as: longitudinal cracks, exposed longitudinal joint, edge cracks, transverse cracks, fretting, and some early developed potholes.
Whitemare Pool circulatory carriageway is also included as part of the scheme due to road pavement degradation.
The proposed work consists of resurfacing the A194(M) Southbound (SB) mainline carriageway, slip roads, designated lanes, and hard shoulder, as well as the A194 WMP Circulatory road pavement.
Associated assets influenced by the works are to be re-established as per the existing layout.
This includes road markings and studs, traffic and weather loops/sensors and bridge joints.
