The brief

NHS Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group (NEW Devon CCG) and Devon County Council are committed to improving outcomes for people with dementia and their carers; recognising the imperative of working together to achieve this.

Commissioners from health and social care are intending to retender for a dementia support service throughout Devon, expected to commence in January 2016.

The delivery of the Dementia Support Service will be in line with the National Dementia Strategy and is an important additional resource for Primary Care in managing a rising number of patients with dementia within increasingly stretched workload capacity.

It also provides visible and tangible benefits to considering and making a diagnosis of dementia in patients who are increasingly struggling with cognitive deficit as they get older.

This service will be an essential element of the overall dementia care pathway, addressing the gap between diagnosis and the need for more intensive support from NHS or social care services.

The outcome of this event is to help to inform us how to approach the procurement of the services in due course to ensure that we deliver the best outcomes for patients.
