The brief

In December 2020, the Royal Borough of Greenwich passed a motion to start the process to become a 'Borough of Sanctuary' with the organisation City of Sanctuary, promoting Greenwich as an open and welcoming place of sanctuary for migrants and resettled persons.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich Resettlement Scheme is being devised with Greenwich Council as the Lead agency alongside a commissioned community organisation to provide holistic support and reintegration services to resettle up to 8 Afghan households in Greenwich in line with the Pan London Fair Share Agreement.

The commissioned agency will recruit settled UK Afghan citizens as part of their staffing and volunteer pool to ensure that the language and cultural needs of the Afghan families are appropriately understood and met in the resettlement process.

Initially intensive support will be required but that support will taper as households become more integrated into the local community and empowered towards independence.

The expectation is that each household will be provided with support from a pool of Resettlement Support Workers and volunteers who will work with them towards independence in the first year and that light-touch support will be available to families after their first year, according to each family or individual's requirement up to a period of 3 years
