The brief

The University of East Anglia (UEA) is an internationally renowned university based in a campus that provides top quality academic, social and cultural facilities to over 17,000 students and 2,500 staff.

The University of East Anglia (UEA) has been ranked 12th by The Times Good University Guide 2017 and 14th by The Complete University Guide 2019.

Located in 320 acres of rolling parkland but just two miles from the centre of the cathedral city of Norwich the University is adjacent to the Norwich Research Park which is home to over 1,000 scientists working in several world ranked institutions.

A total of 15,178 full-time students are currently studying at the University, 12,118 undergraduates and 3,060 postgraduates.

Of these 3,822 are non-UK students from more than 100 countries worldwide.

The University employs approximately 3,500 staff, a third of whom work part-time.

More than 1,500 staff are academic (including 370 researchers) and the rest are administrative, technical or general staff.

Founded in 1963 and located on a single campus (the \"Campus\") on the western fringe of Norwich, the University is ranked as one of the United Kingdom's foremost higher education and research institutions enjoying an international reputation for excellence in many of its disciplines.

As a consequence of its reputation, the University continues to grow.

The University's academic record is matched by its fine campus.

Laid out to a Master Plan by Sir Denys Lasdun, many of the early buildings were designed by him.

These have been added to by subsequent generations of architects, all of whom have left their distinctive mark.

They include for example, Feilden and Mawson, Arup Associates, Foster and Partners, Mather Associates, John Miller and Partners, R H Partnership, RMJM, Shepheard Epstein Hunter, LSI Architects and more recently Architype, Pick Everard and Hawkins Brown.

In its short history, the University can boast in excess of 30 Architectural and civic Trust Awards.

As a consequence, English Heritage takes a keen interest in the University's refurbishment programme and new buildings.

In October 2003 the core buildings of the Campus were Grade II and Grade II* Listed and, in 2006 the ground breaking Conservation Development Strategy received formal support from the Norwich City Planning Committee.

In 2012 the iconic Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts was also Grade II* Listed.

As a single campus university with a student population in the region of 16,000, the Campus operates as an autonomous community.

The demand for space and modern facilities of a higher standard than originally conceived has been growing steadily throughout the community in recent years.

The inherent flexibility of the original buildings and the quality of the Campus generally has provided a sound basis for adaptation.

With a number of Full Planning Consents already achieved, there is every reason to be confident that this will continue to b...
