The brief

The Monkton Terrace Footbridges were constructed in circa 1974.

They comprise two separate structures supporting public footpaths.

Each bridge sits either side of the Network Rail bridge (masonry arch) which carries the main carriageway of Monkton Terrace.

The structures carry pedestrians and cyclists over two railway lines.

The northern line is owned by Network Rail and carries goods traffic to and from the Shell Oil Refinery in Jarrow.

The southern line is owned by Nexus Rail and forms part of the Pelaw to South Shields branch of the Tyne and Wear Metro.

Initial works The following remedial works are proposed prior to commencing works on the East footbridge: o Erect pedestrian diversion signs o Prepare the site compound and secure the site o Ensure that Nexus Metro rail possession and permits are in place Main works The following remedial works are proposed for both of the footbridges: • Install rail protection measures to the footbridge. • Removal of existing parapets and cutting down of the sockets to below the surface of the existing reinforced concrete plinth. • Treating and repair of the voids within the concrete plinth, created from the removal of the parapet. • Extension of the existing concrete plinth (from 200mm to 300mm) to accommodate the new parapet connection details. • Installation of new surface mounted parapets, to both footbridges, which will be drilled and bolted down into the extended reinforced concrete upstand. • The deck waterproofing system, joints and surfacing will also be replaced and repaired as part of these works. • Miscellaneous maintenance repairs. • The works are to be undertaken following the installation of edge protection, which will be undertaken during overnight possessions of the Nexus Rail lines.

Further possessions will be required for: o the re-pointing of the existing abutments and the removal of the edge protection.
