THE UNITED KINGDOM SPORTS COUNCIL
Athlete Medical Insurance Scheme
UK Sport's Athlete Medical Scheme (AMS) is a medical insurance scheme which covers the costs of healthcare of funded athletes who are members of Olympic and Paralympic sports World Class Programmes.
National Governing Bodies, funded or unfunded, may also purchase places on AMS at an agreed cost by UK Sport, to provide medical cover to athletes not on a World Class Programme.
The mission of the AMS is to drive an efficient and effective athlete medical scheme to develop athlete health and wellbeing.
Beneath this mission are three objectives: 1.
Ensure that athletes receive timely and high-quality medical care when needed to bring them back to full health and fitness 2.
Ensure that the AMS scheme is cost and operationally efficient, effective and understood by all stakeholders 3.
Drive the insights from AMS usage to identify opportunities to advance the Athlete Health strategy To meet these objectives and advance the scheme, UK Sport facilitates and chair a governance group made up of medical leads from within the high-performance system, the incumbent medical insurance provider and insurance brokers, and the AMS Manager.
This group meet on a quarterly basis, ensuring good governance of the scheme.
UK Sport pays an annual premium to cover the costs of claims and, subject to approval and conditions of cover by AMS the athlete receives healthcare.
It is a free service to athletes and no costs are recharged to their governing bodies.
An initial introduction to AMS is set out in the information leaflet at Appendix 1.
The pre-authorisation of claims is conducted by an AMS Manager, employed within the British Olympic Association (BOA) and who is the key liaison for claims with the incumbent insurance provider.
The Athlete Medical Scheme Manager will maintain records of pre-authorised claims on the Athlete Medical Scheme system and oversee claims against agreed benefit limits.
AMS is due for renewal with effect from 1 April 2023.
UK Sport now invites Tenders for the provision of AMS in accordance with this ITT and the attached documents.
UK Sport seeks to enter into a long-term arrangement with a sole insurer supplier for the next 3 years with a possible extension for a further 1 year.
UK Sport seek to also insert a break clause after 12 months of the agreement commencing.
As this process is conducted using the open procedure, there is no separate pre-qualification stage or questionnaire.
