The brief

The Science Museum is creating a major permanent historical gallery exploring the people, the tools and the power of mathematics in the modern world.

Covering a period roughly 1600 to the present, and occupying a prominent 900m2 gallery at the heart of the Museum, the gallery will be a unique public space dedicated to mathematics and will combine iconic historical artefacts (large and small), interactivity, film and imagery, as well as hosting a seamless integration with an interactive online presence.

The Museum is looking to appoint an architect to create the new, high-end Mathematics Gallery at the Science Museum to support the realisation of the vision outlined above.

This gallery will be the highest-quality museum display on mathematics in the world.

The new gallery will bring to life what is often perceived as a dry, complex subject.

Using the Museum's unrivalled national collections and experience of interpretation environments, the gallery will make mathematics meaningful and relevant for visitors.

It will deliver life-enhancing experiences for all generations - providing a unique learning resource for a wide range of visitors, regardless of their experience of the subject.
