The brief

East Devon District Council (EDDC) abstracts water for the Mill Leat (“the Leat”) from the River Otter at the Head Weir, located upstream of Ottery St Mary.

The abstraction is controlled by a weir at the upstream end of the Mill Leat (“the Weir”).

Deterioration of the Weir structure has resulted in flows bypassing the crest, leading to inadequate water levels in the River Otter for the adjacent Head Weir fish pass and eel pass to function effectively.

The proposed works comprise the removal and replacement of the existing Weir structure, together with maintenance dredging of the Leat.
