The brief

Prolonged periods of sickness absence can lead to job losses and those effected often struggling to get back into work.

As a result, these individuals have difficulty supporting themselves and their family.

Without the positive psychological and social support that comes from being in work, health and wellbeing can deteriorate.

The impact of this downward spiral is felt by each person affected, their families, their employers because of the costs of sickness absence and staff turnover, and health services that bear additional costs.

Whilst significant progress has been made in recent years in supporting those who are unemployed to seek work, relatively little practical support is available to help people stay in work.

The Council is keen to address this gap by entering into a contractual agreement with a provider organisation which will deliver job retention support to Barnet's Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) alongside support to implement healthy workplace practices.
