The brief

INVITATION TO TENDER FOR consultancy to establish a new vision for the Fleet Air Arm Museum, including architectural design concepts.

In January 2018 the trustees of the National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN) agreed to fund work to establish the foundations of a major redevelopment programme for one of its constituents, the Fleet Air Arm Museum (FAAM).

The NMRN now wishes to appoint a consultant(s) to facilitate the agreement of a new vision for FAAM.FAAM is one of nine museums and historic ships making up the NMRN.

The Museum was first established in 1964 and has grown from a small Royal Navy-run operation to a fully accredited museum.

It is now one of the largest naval aviation museums in Europe, holding over 100 airframes, many with significant heritage merit.

It is one of the top three tourist attractions in Somerset, attracting over one hundred thousand visitors annually. An internal assessment (2017) has concluded that the Museum is in need of major investment to meet national museum standards of collections care and to provide a high quality visitor experience.

Underpinning this process is the need to agree a new vision for the museum, to give clarity of understanding about its purpose and engage all of its stakeholders and communities in determining the most effective development options.
