The Paternoster was manufactured by J&E Hall Ltd and has been in operation since the opening of library in 1967, the system serves 5 levels of the building and is utilised by staff and students.
As a unique facility within the University the Paternoster modernisation scheme will look to preserve its character, charm and functionality whilst enhancing certain features for its continual operation.
The selected contractor will be retained as the Principal Contractor for the works as defined under the CDM Regulations 2015 The modernisation works will generally consist of replacing and upgrading the control systems, replacement of parts including the sheaves, the suspension chains and overhauling selected elements such as the geared machine and cabins.
The contractor will also be required to undertake all associated builders, mechanical and electrical works required to complete the modernisation scheme.

There is potential to extend this to no later than June 2020, under controlled conditions.
The University has retained the services of a specialist Lift Consultant who will be fulfilling the role of the Principal Designer and will be preparing the technical specification for the modernisation works.
