Artist Appointment
The redesign of Kings Square forms part of the re-development of Kings Quarter which forms a major regeneration initiative within Gloucester.
Kings Square was originally built in circa1928 and has seen various changes in fortune as the city has developed over the last eighty years.
As a key part of the re development, a programme of cultural commissions has been developed by Ginkgo Projects to provide a canvas for the activation of Kings Square through formal and informal cultural programming and orchestration.
The programme will embed cultural intelligence and creativity into the public realm, engaging stakeholders, residents and visitors so that they can play an active role in bringing Kings Quarter to life.
The programme consists of both permanent, integrated work and temporary projects predominantly based within Kings Square itself but extending out into the wider scheme.
Projects include physical detailing of the space through sculptural interventions and activation of the square with lighting, moveable design elements and a programme of interactive digital activation.
This is a permanent, integrated work package that focuses on the sculptural edge for the square and creative lighting, imparting a sense of uniqueness and quality.
This document sets out the background of the project; the creative rationale behind the commissions programme as whole, locations of work, requirements in terms of materials and budget - all of which forms part of the tender information pack.
The requirement described in this document will be in the form of 2 lots as follows: Lot 1 - Sculptural Edge only Lot 2 - Creative Lighting only Bidders may bid for a single lot or both.
In conjunction with the Authority, Ginkgo Projects will work closely with the selected artist to ensure that their designs are carefully and successfully integrated into the scheme.
A group has been brought together called the Kings Quarter Art Commissioning Panel to guide the artist commissions.
This group consists of the client, project manager and other key figures from local cultural and community organisations.
This group will approve the artist's designs at key stages of development.
The selected artist will be expected to meet with this group at regular intervals to talk through their design progress.
