The brief

This Contract Award Notice is for the provision of Planned Preventative Maintenance and ad hoc Corrective Maintenance; and provision of consumables associated with Explosive Trace Detection machines produced by Smiths Detection Watford Ltd.

These are ETD machines which DfT had purchased from Smiths Detection Watford Ltd (the machine manufacturer) and deployed (loaned) to certain high-risk airports/ authorities overseas; airports that provide direct flights to the UK.

DfT are responsible for ensuring the ETD machines are kept in good working order for use by end users at overseas airports, whether by host states or airlines, the latter of which undertake additional measures at the gate in certain countries.

Therefore, while DfT retains this responsibility, the contract for the provision of these services with Smiths Detection Watford Ltd continually needs to be extended.

It is the ambition to transfer responsibility for purchasing consumables, parts kits and maintenance of such 'loaned' ETD machines to the relevant country/airport.

Therefore, this Contract Extension has included a Break Clause within the existing Contract to enable each time DfT transfers, to host states or airlines, the responsibility for ETD machines, Smiths Detection Watford Ltd will revise its quote to reflect the associated removal.
