The 2021/22 Annual Director of Public Health's (ADPH) Report will focus on the built environment.

It will explore the impact of the built environment on the health and wellbeing of the Birmingham population and its impact on the population's daily life.

The built environment refers to all the human-made environment that provides the setting for human activity.

It is proposed that the ADPH Report forms a journey of the impact of the Birmingham built environment on health and wellbeing.

Throughout the journey, discussion will be tailored to exam the influence of the built environment in sustaining health and wellbeing, with a view to reducing inequalities.

Citizen journeys will be established through ethnographic research that will capture the views and experience of citizens' interactions with the built environment.

The research will focus on home, journey and non-home destination.

The ADPH report will explore how the public's experience of the built environment around them impacts their general health and wellbeing by sharing in their daily journeys.

The report will incorporate the lived experience of citizens from a range of different demographics on their daily journeys.

It will capture their experience of being at home, travelling, and their experience at their respective destinations.

These citizen narratives and experiences will provide further insight into how the built environments impacts health and wellbeing.

The ethnographic research will illustrate: o The views and experiences (positive and negative) of the impact of the built environment from a representative range of citizens' perspectives.

For example, homes, non-residential buildings, streets/sidewalks, advertising, open/public spaces, and transportation options (infrastructure, not services) in Birmingham. o How the health of citizens is impacted by the built environment around them. o What citizens believe they can do to sustainably improve buildings and other built infrastructure to advance the health of the population. o The extent to which citizens feel empowered (knowledge and ability to act) to improve their built environment when it does not meet or support the needs of the individual, their community, or the city as a whole.

The anticipated start of the contract is 1st November 2021.
